The clash of fanatic Christian beliefs within his family instigated further trauma, prompting Jonathan to find an unlikely haven in the
criminal underworld. Jono started numbing his pain with narcotics at the age of 14. The subsequent years were marred by crime, drug abuse, and encounters with the law, culminating in him becoming a state witness in a murder trial. Jonathan’s journey took harrowing turns, from surviving shootings and stabbings to escaping arrest and facing the loss of a close friend. It
was in the aftermath of this tragedy that he embarked on his path to recovery, a journey that began in earnest in 2006 after years of
grappling with addiction and trauma. Since then, Jonathan has become a beacon of hope for countless
individuals in South Africa battling similar demons. Appointed as Director at the Drug Educational Counsel in 2008, he has been
instrumental in guiding and supporting hundreds through the throes of addiction. Beyond his professional endeavors, Jonathan is a devoted father who has weathered the storms of chronic illness and hospitalizations with his two children.

The universe wasn’t done testing Jonathan, and in the wake of a divorce, he faced his own battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The journey through cancer in 2020 became a terrifying yet beautiful chapter, imbued with insights that now inform his work in offering assisted cancer support and mentorship to others on similar paths of self-healing. Through all these challenges, Jonathan discovered a reservoir of self-love and compassion that he never knew existed.
